It worked for me!
I read the instructions with paranoid caution, because there were so many complaints on this thread. The first time I downloaded the image, something went wrong, and it was called something like “unconfirmed CDN”; a second download resulted in a Disc Image File, 4,941,560 KB, named ProPlus2021Retail.img . This was the correct file. The first time I clicked setup.exe, I got a dialog telling me I had to un-install my copy of Office 2016. My second attempt loaded the software without incident, I entered my activation key in Word, as directed, and --it works.

Download the software from here http://officecdn.microsoft.com/pr/492350f6-3a01-4f97-b9c0-c7c6ddf67d60/media/en-us/ProPlus2021Retail.img.
You may need to copy the link and paste it into your browser’s address bar.
Once the download is complete, right-click on the file and choose “Mount”. It will show up as a new disk drive on your computer.
Navigate to that disk drive and double click on setup.exe to start the installation.
After the installation is complete, Run WORD (not Office 365) and enter the product key when prompted.
When done, right-click on the drive that was created in step 2 via File Explorer and choose “Unmount” or “Eject”.
