Do I need to have a Microsoft ID to install this OS, or can I simply use the license key to activate windows installed from other media?

Ooh redemption code to get license key… I’m guessing that means I need to log into MS with a Microsoft ID to download the license key to use it on a windows build - which then ties that PC to a Microsoft ID, giving MS something to associate data scraped from the PC’s usage with.

I’d be glad to find out I am wrong though because then I’d buy it

When you purchase a key, they send you the key. Then you go through the trouble of putting the code in only to find out they sold you a flagged key and it won’t work. Don’t bother.

Chiming in to confirm that my key was bogus too. Don’t bother with this at all.

Adding my two cents here too since Woot screwed me out of $120 last year for the same “deal”
Keys will not work and Woot customer support response was to shrug it off.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY

Hi there. CS reached out to you on 12/13 to resolve this issue. Check your junk/spam folders.

I bought two of these, one in September (39.99) and one in December ($24.99). Product key for the September purchase upon activation was a Win 10 Home key, the December key activated Win 10 Pro. CS told me September purchase is beyond 30 day return/refund. If you buy one install it right away or you’ll be SOL! or in my case out 40 bucks…

Update 1/22/24 customer service sent me a replacement product code. Thank you Woot!

Support for Windows 10 is scheduled to end October 2025.

Are you saying woot is a scam site now?? They’re just blatantly scamming customers with bogus keys?! I really hope it was just an honest oversight and there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation for all of this. My Key didn’t work either, but CS checked on it and sent me a replacement key straightaway… I have yet to try the replacement though, so fingers crossed…

I seem to be the odd one out here but my key worked fine last year… ymmv?

Ordered several weeks ago. Never received key.

I’m sorry about that. Have you reached out to Woot! Customer Service. To speed things up, let them know if you prefer a return/refund or a replacement (if possible).

Please allow 24-48h for them to respond.

Browser: Use the Woot! Customer Service form.

Woot! App: Choose Account from the bottom navigation and then Support.

Self-Return: Items without Li-Ion batteries can be self-returned within 30 days. Go to your Order Details to get started. The return label will be emailed from UPS.

Note: Woot! Customer Service replies go to the email address on your Woot! account, not your Amazon login email if used/different.

Key is bogus - do not buy. Woot usually does such a good job curating these deals, I can’t believe they’re still selling these.

Bought a couple days ago. My key activated just fine for Home. Guess I was lucky.

Morning. make sure you’re following the installation instructions. Also, try typing the key instead of copy/paste.

I am in the same boat. I bought one of these, put in the key to upgrade my Win10 Home Edition. It did not work. I reached out to customer support, and they provided me with another key that did not work. Their answer was to simply leave me with a half-operable Windows 10 install and just refund me. Despite reaching out to them again to escalate the issue, I am getting ghosted by their support. No one is owning up to the fact they need to provide me with a legitimate key since they have crippled my laptop until they make it right. Why is it they can get away with this and are not offering to fix their problem? They could be in serious legal trouble for this from customers and Microsoft especially.

The refund is their responsibility. That’s standard in the T&C for practically every retailer out there.

Type the following at the command prompt, run as administrator:

slmgr.vbs /upk

This will remove the current key.

wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey

Note down the 25-alphanumeric key. This is your stock Windows 10 home key, which you’ll be able to reenter and at least restore the licensing back to stock.

(Note that I am not staff. I just volunteer to help out on the forums.)

Thank you Narfcake for being so helpful and stepping in to try to help!
Since it updated to Pro during the process of entering the first Pro key they provided, after clearing the latest “bad” pro key they gave, then running the command to retrieve the original key, it will now not accept the original Home edition key that shipped with the laptop. So I am still in the same boat.
When entering the original key it provided: “The product key you entered didn’t work. Check the product key and try again, or enter a different one. (0x004f050)”
Back on the main activation screen in Windows settings it says: “The last product key (ID: 00330-80000-00000-AA405) you entered can’t be used on this copy of Windows. (0x803FA067)”
So, even though I got the key removed, I can’t roll back from Pro to Home unless I completely reset my machine back to the factory defaults.
