This tablet works OK with Fire Toolbox used on it. Not as great as 5 years ago with the 2019 tablet, but still very serviceable
I got this one for 75 or 80 bucks on prime day in 2021 I think I feel like such a silly consumer… I did not need it but it was prime day and I got some kind of extra deal on it or something.
Anyway though I can’t say it wasn’t worth 80 bucks. It sure as hell was. I was able to put the Google Play store on it, so it can serve as a remote control from Roku or fire TV or Android TV. Honestly, it’s almost worth it for that alone because standby battery life on a fire TV can be weeks. So it makes an optimal remote control for your TVs when you lose your remotes or the battery dies or whatever.
It’s also nice if you need to use a tablet outside and you don’t want it to get messed up. Obviously the performance is not gray, but that’s not going to be an issue if you’re dealing with using it as a glorified e-reader or content consumption device.
That said, It is a minor pain downloading four different apps to get the Google Play store to work and some of the apps won’t work anyways. Most do but it’s worth pointing it out, and file management is still a disaster.
You can’t make any widgets or shortcuts… But that’s why it’s 70 bucks or whatever.
But you could make an argument for something like a tab S7, Lenovo duet, ONN and some other cheap options that use basic stock Android. Lenovo p11 is pretty cheap.
And if you don’t mind a Chromebook, there are some benefits to getting a Lenovo Chromebook, duet or something. It’s a little more expensive but it comes with the keyboard and I saw them on sale at Walmart for a hundred bucks once.
. Those can run Linux, proper desktop extensions etc…
It will be interesting to see what the deals are for some of these used pixel tablets and OnePlus tablets now that they’re going to be over a year old soon. And we should see second generation products.
Now that you can buy the pixel tablet for 400 bucks brand new I would not be stunned. If in 6 months you could find it for 200 bucks for a grade A refurb or something.
I should also add I did get three free months of Microsoft office 365 with this. Just something to consider.
If you’re going to be paying for that monthly anyways then that’s another $21 in savings.
I think it comes with other options for free trials of Disney Plus and Amazon music. But beeare. Couple years ago realized several months late that I had been paying for Disney Plus for a while and didn’t use it at all.
I
I’ve been contemplating using one of these for a security camera monitor. I’ve got an ancient economy line Samsung tablet serving that purpose right now, but its performance is sometimes really laggy.
I’d have to side-load the viewer app, but it may just be worth it. I wonder how hard it is to get a custom ROM on one of these. (Then again, I’ve got enough projects.)
Lock screen ads… Oh, Amazon.
It’s HD! Wow! We’ve reached 1999.
Might as well get the Fire HD 10 (2019). Cheaper and probably would do the same things you want it to.
Got my '21 HD10 in June of '23, deal of the day price of $89. Kinda makes this not as good of deal as it could be.
If you are buying this tablet or any other Fire tablet to watch F1 TV DON’T! As of December 3, 2024 they no longer support F1TV
