Zune 80GB Multimedia Player & Home Audio/Video Pack

AN FYI TO ALL ZUNE WOOTERS:

Call up Microsoft (1-877-438-9863 and say “operator” until a human picks up) and tell them you purchased a refurbished Zune 80 and that the box (which also reads refurbished) claims premium headphones. Ask nicely if it would be possible to receive the premium headphones listed on the box. You’ll have to wait 5-10 minutes as the CSR “speaks to our insert_some_silly_named_department_here” and they will come back with the headphone order already completed. All she needed was the serial number, my name, and my address. She said they should be here within a week!

sooo..
i called that number and the csr registered my zune for me and got the order for my replacement premium earphones all set up! no problems! and all in about 10 minutes!
she said that they should be arriving here in about 5-7 business days!

thanks for posting that!!

Didn’t come with the premium headphone (the ones with magnetic backs and braided cords) even though it says they do on the box, which is a medium sized letdown. Otherwise, it’s exactly as pictured

This worked well, thanks for the heads up. Called, said “operator” once (after listening to the recording and the choices), they took the S/N and registered it for me, and they are shipping out the premium headphones USPS, 5-7 days. If I could do it that easily, woot could have done this for us.

Everyone should register their Zune with Microsoft.

Doing so automatically bumps you from a 90-day warranty to a full year. With a refurb, it’s never a bad idea to have a little extra coverage.

Called Microsoft and got them to replace the headphones with premium. Got my five dollar refund, will be getting the premiums within the week, and can keep my standard headphones for the trouble. all in all, problem solved. thanks a heck of a lot, wxasgxs!

Earlier in the thread and in relation to this headphone issue, I noticed that a few people received a response from WOOT that, using my own quick paraphrasing, equated to a statement of “Contact Microsoft and you should be taken care of”.

And as made evident by a few posters so far, contacting Microsoft has…taken care of the problem…

As a first time WOOT!er, I’m surprised to see such a high number of apparent frequent shoppers jump down WOOT!'s throat so quickly. Yes, they made a mistake, and are liable to an extent…but this really seems absolutely acceptable.

Contact Microsoft, get the headphones.
Contact WOOT!, get a $5 refund (on an already great deal) for your inconvenience.

Seems like all’s well that ends well, to me.

Got mine today too. The Zune was black and in mint condition. The box DID contain the premium headphones but no additional foam inserts. I’m glad Microsoft is doing the right thing and sending out the premium headphones free of charge to the folks that didn’t get them.

So, I called the support number, and after a few minutes, the premium headphones are being mailed to me.

Everyone who didn’t get them, register your zune online, then call the number.

Got the crap ones. Basically had to haggle with MS call rep, but got the premium ones. Get em while they are hot boys!!!

YEE-HAW!

Well, I spoke way to f-ing soon. This thing will not charge. Period. It will not charge via the dock, the AC adapter, the new sync cable, or the old zync cable which I know works with my 30GB Zune, or in any combination thereof.

I only get this incredibly faint battery charging symbol, and after an hour of charging, that’s all I get. Tried to reset it, tried everything. Looks like it’s going to get shipped back to MS.

I used a Woot refurb Zune 30 for about a year and I loved it, but storage became and issue and so last xmas I bought an iPod Classic 120. I actually had another b/w iPod previous to the Zune that was stolen.

I’ve used both products and here is my bottom line in comparison between the Zune and iPod Classic-- The Zune is better (better menus, better screen, better (easier to use while driving) controls, radio, wifi). HOWEVER, it has an unforgivable Achilles heel, no dock connector based line level audio out.

In my car today I have a single 20 dollar aftermarket cable I plug into the bottom of my iPod. The iPod puts out beautiful, loud line level signal to my car stereo while it charges. This, to me, is perfection.

The year I had my Zune I had to get two cables: one to charge dock connector from the cigarette lighter, and one 1/8” to plug into the headphone jack, which put out a low powered (below line level) audio signal, even when turned up all the way. I had to crank up the car stereo which made the end result “noisier” (a signal to noise issue).

Even using the proprietary Zune AV dock connector through my home stereo the product had below line level signal output.

This limiting of the Zune seems to me to be about Microsoft trying to limit or control the third party peripherals market. Maybe it makes business sense to them, but they lost me as a customer. Until I hear that this hobbling of their product line is over, I will not be coming back, which makes me sad because (from the standpoint of user interface) I would really prefer to have a Zune.

Bottom line, if the Zune had nonproprietary line level audio out I would own a Zune, but as things stand I cannot support the product.

I would not suggest the Zune for anyone who would want to use it for anything beyond a headphone based audio player.

The iPod has a Proprietary Line Level out on the bottom of them as well! It is just that manufacturers have decided to make soo may 3rd party accessories for iPods that you start to think of the iPod connector as a “Standard”.

I have one of those “Microsoft Zune Car Pack v2” FM Transmitters, and it works well. Once connector to the bottom of my Zune and I have power to my Zune, and it also plays out my car stereo!
There are not many 3rd party companies that want to make accessories for the Zune, so the accessories tend to be more expensive than similar devices available for the iPod. But do not fool yourself, the iPod connector is just as proprietary as the Zune connector is.

This was also my first Woot. I called Microsoft and after about 10 minutes, I have premium headphones on the way. They were very helpful and did register the device for me.

Do we get our 5$ refund automatically or do we have to email woot?

Got mine today. Perfect shape despite sitting out in the rain all day. Got the standard buds. Called the Zune Hotline and talked to a very nice lady in Asia. My premium set will be here in 5-7 days. Very easily handled. Thanks Woot and Zune! Now to get my son to load it up…

Bah. Looks like I got a brick. Gonna have to send it in to Microsoft. Thank goodness for the 1-year warranty it comes with. Poo. I was so excited to get it and I can’t use it yet. It’s driving me crazy! Ahhh!

just got mine today, but I’m in the same boat - defective Zune. More waiting is killing me~

I guess I could add that I got the premium headphones… if anyone is keeping tabs…

Test to see if I’m still blocked…

(My IP has been blocked for the past hour or so – I can get in via a different IP, or an alternate woot domain, but all my computers were blocked from the forum section via the main woot.com domain. I sent an email asking why, and then noticed from another thread that other people at random are having the same issue, so I sent another email advising that there seems to be a spotty malfunction upstream that affects random users. Now it is letting me in again, but don’t know if I can post. This sort of malfunction is particularly perplexing (for a provider) since it is “silent” – those who are hit by it can’t let it be known THAT they’re having problems, therefore the provider goes for a while thinking everything is fine.)

[Well, two fa****ilures so far… will wait a tad and then try again.]

BZZZZT! Wrong answer, but thanks for playing.

Here’s a couple of free clues, in case you find yourself back in line some time in the future.

First off, I have a nice pair of shoes. Yet, if I ordered ANOTHER pair of decent shoes – let’s say some nice wingtips – but when the package arrived, it had some fuzzy-bunny slippers in it, for some odd reason I can’t see myself waxing philosophical and shrugging it off with, “Oh, well, I already have some nice shoes, so no biggie.”

Secondly, as others have pointed out, your Zune-cred is somewhat lacking, in that you apparently didn’t bother reading the listing info, which clearly pointed out that these are NOT the crummy phones that come with the Zune 30 (since THIS is a Zune 80!)

THESE phones are worth thirty dollars.

Now, in the grand scheme of things, thirty dollars ain’t a whole lot of money. Heck, thirty BILLION doesn’t seem to be much at all, judging by Our Glorious Leaders and their financial escapades. In fact, at the rate they’re going thirty TRILLION won’t be all that much.

But, seeing as how I am a disabled old fart, living off your Social Security payments, thirty bucks IS a lot of money for ME.

I think you’ll be a lot happier if you take that crummy attitude and stow it. I know the rest of us folks will be a lot happier if you do.
[/quote]

Actually you gippy cry baby, your crappy attempt of an analogy is deeply flayed.

You are buying a Zune 80, you got a Zune 80. You are crying about what would be the equivalent of 1 lace for some shoes.

Reading the listing has nothing to do with Zune cred. I just know the standard `phones suck, and I have a box full of crappy buds just like them. So I have quality head phones that I use with my Zune. Your reading comprehension is the only thing that is lacking in here.

A buddy has a 30, and 2 80s. I have tested those buds and other than the neato magnets on the back side, they weren’t any better than the 3-4 pairs of SCs I have or the Panasonics I use ever day. I picked up about 10 pairs of SCs for 9.99 at FYE about a year ago. Gave some for gifts and kept some for spares.

Since you are a poor broken man, I’ll send you a pair for you to stow your crying and keep your Worthers Originals from sticking together. Or how about some high quality shoe laces, so after you carve “Kogaku was here” you can hang yourself with them.

BTW Mr Gimp Social Security, My zune 80 is synced and loading up on movies so I can sit and watch them at work, on my Gov salary.

Yay, Zune (so called) premium ear buds going into the junk draw with the standard ear buds… :stuck_out_tongue:
