Pedroncelli - Four Pack plus One

Hi, Ed!! We missed you last summer on the RPM Wine Tour. Your enthusiastic support of the idea (and promise to host a dinner) was definitely a factor in the Tour actually happening – we were disappointed you were away and couldn’t do the dinner. That said, Jim was a most gracious host who gave us a very informative tour of the vineyards and poured some very nice wines, including a 10 year old Cabernet Sauvignon for contrast with the current release.

And, at a New York woot tasting, you’ll be pleased to know that a 1971 Pedroncelli Cabernet was holding up very well and outshone a very faded 1973 Ingelnook Cask Cabernet that was a near-great wine 10 years ago (Jon Richmond’s first year as head winemaker; a wine that many said put them back on the map…)

I was in Napa and Sonoma in March for Mario Perelli-Minetti’s 100th birthday. I didn’t get as far up as Geyserville to see you; too much time spent apartment hunting for my daughter in the City - next time!

For all: My order was for the maximum available, of course, and perhaps I’ll get to 'rat one of these - even though I was a labrat for the zin last year.

Pedroncelli wines have been a ‘local knowledge’ open secret in the wine business for at least 40-50 years. The’re sometimes a little rustic in style, but they’re always well-made, characteristic of the varietals and terroir, and provide an outstanding value for money. Usually one of the best QPRs in California over the past 40 years.

If you want an idea what people think of Pedroncelli wines, check out the Pedroncelli Quartet thread from February 2008.

Also no Washington, DC? Our wine shipping laws, previously incomprehensible (and never enforced because even the authorities didn’t understand them) were recently liberalized.

(Sitting here in Argentina, pondering all the wonderful, cheap Malbecs, maybe its just as well?)

By the picture, shouldn’t it read ‘1 Pack plus 4?’

Oh, in for 1.

WD, you’re gonna get me in a lot of trouble!! I was hoping to see some cheese or nuts to cool off the credit card. You might as well be selling Hoovers because you’re sucking my wallet dry!!

I REALLY enjoyed the last Pedroncelli offer!! I wasn’t expecting great things because of the price, BUT WOW - THIS WINE IS REALLY GOOD! I’ve been nursing my last purchase to make it last. This is what I call a “sleeper wine”…not that you’ll fall asleep after drinking it, but it’s a screaming deal for some really good juice that I wasn’t aware of! I had to jump in for two this morning and thinking about gifting and calling the son to place an order.

Regretfully - Thank you WD and Ed

In for 2. It’s been a while since I have ordered anything and the wine cellar is under 100 bottles…

I’m in!

Had the '05 Mother Clone recently. Tasty, tasty!

Would love to labrat any of these.

Several folks have already raved about the QPR of Pedroncelli wines, but if you want to see the numbers on the discount before pulling the trigger, click the link above.

CT prices, discount details, winery link, etc., all included above.

WD – don’t think this gets you off the hook for the wineries that were at D&D
Oh looky, I’m in before the rat deadline

And I’ll be heading to Buffalo for the tasting there, and, if memory serves, we’re all planning to gather tomorrow evening. So we could all sample something together from across the country.

Jus’ Sayin’.

For those interested, a group of us Wine.Wooters went on a Historical Tour of Napa/Sonoma last year, and there are pictures of us walking through the Pedroncelli vineyards. First 28 pictures in this photo album. Jim Pedroncelli, owner and California wine pioneer, is in the blue shirt in the pictures.
Actually, if you look through that album at the “Monday” photos, you’ll find a lot more, too. Pedroncelli was the first stop on the tour, and quite a kick off for the entire event – very beautiful vineyards, extremely gracious and knowledgeable host, and very tasty wines.

As for these wines, I had the 2004 Mother Clone Zin last year (purchased locally), and here are my [brief] notes:
4/1/2008 rated 89 points: Really enjoyed this. It started off with an excellent nose (fruity and fragrant) but quite muted flavor. After just a few minutes in glass, though, it started to open up. It was quite pleasant even as it warmed up to room temp. The finish and mid-palate became more acidic as it warmed, which I generally don’t like, but this has been quite nice. Finished the bottle first night. No decant

I also bought the 2006 Dry Rose last summer on the RPM tour, but do not appear to have notes for that one. Considering that I only brought home 12 bottles from that entire trip, though, I clearly liked it.

As both wines are in this offer, I am seriously considering ordering, though I very definitely should not.

I’m just a little smug to be visiting them this weekend during Dry Creek’s Passport weekend. I’ll wait and buy at the winery.

please someone help…SIWBM - ??? I’ve been trying to decipher, and feel like an idiot because I can’t figure it out…

** nice flip on the rocket scientist…

Of course I clicked it. Folks are screaming QPR, and it sounds like these will be decent examples of how each varietal should be represented. I don’t believe I’ve had a PS yet, and the only sangio that I recall having so far was that JanKris…

Problem is, I think that these will just about flush out that 24 bottle rack I got a few weeks ago…

Sewf-Imposed Wine Buying Moratorium

You may see the SI replaced with many other letters (E = economy, W = wife, CC = credit card, B = bank, …)

Ummm, you buy 'em to drink 'em rather than to fill a rack…that’s a luxury that comes with time. You’ll simply have to do some triage and open some wine… awwwwwwww!

In for one…have to stock up b/f we have to move to a state that will never make the list. Sniff. Sniff. Only two more months of wine.woot and I just got here…sigh.

The in-laws descend on us for 10 days as of late this morning…would certainly be in for ratting. Lots of extra palates and certainly the need to get my juice on will be in my home.

I guess we must all be on the Pedroncelli wavelength at the same time. Two days ago, just pulled out a 2004 Mother Clone. After having had a series of well made fruit forward wines, it was refreshing to gnaw on the a more subtle, oaky, musty, and tannic MC. It was at the Pedroncelli tasting on tour that I (with the guidance of rpm) began to get an appreciation of the trade-offs of fruit-forward drink now, vs structured for the long-haul, might-be-a-bit-hard-to-drink-now wines - expecially when Jim pulled out the older wines to get an appreciation of where these wines were going in ten years.

Was gonna wait for rat comments, but the comments so far have done me in (I’m weak).

Question for Pedroncelli–what are some recommended/ideal foods to go with each of these? Especially the Rosé as I drink mostly reds?

Thanks!

Fortunately it’s getting to be grilling season, and I have willing friends. I believe there will be a handful of folks over tomorrow night (that’s the begging).
